DIY: Last minute Christmas gift ideas

Christmas shopping can be really stressful and expensive. If you don’t have a lot of money you can spend this year, but want to get personal and fun gifts for your friends and family, here are some great ideas on how to personalize your Christmas gifts by making them yourself!

1. Personalized mug

For this gift, you will need a plain mug (best to buy a white or a light-colored one) and a permanent marker. First, take a piece of paper and sketch what you want to draw on the mug. When you choose what you will draw, take a pencil and lightly sketch the same image onto the mug. You can easily erase the pencil once you are finished with drawing on the mug. Now, take a permanent marker and go over the pencil. By using a permanent marker, you are making sure that the color will stick to the mug. After finishing your drawing, put the mug in the oven for 30 minutes on the temperature of 350 degrees. Let it cool in the oven and you’re done.

2. Body scrub

For this gift you will need sugar, essential oils, almond or olive oil and a container you will mix it in. Take the container and put two cups of sugar, one tablespoon of almond oil and a few drops of the essential oils. Mix it together until you get a smooth paste. If you want, you can add a few drops of food paint in it, just to make it more interesting and Christmassy. And there you have it, a cheap, easy and personal present.

3. Old CD ornaments

If you are tired of your old, warn out ornaments, or have a friend who has a problem like this, don’t sweat. No need to run off to the store and buy expensive ornaments, when you can make them yourself. All you will need are some old CDs, ornaments, glue and scissors. First, cut up your CDs to random rectangles and triangles. Take your ornament and put a small amount of hot glue anywhere you want. Then put the CD rectangle over it, holding it still for a couple of seconds with your finger. Repeat the process until the entire surface of the ornament is covered. Let it dry and you’re done.

4. Candles

Most people don’t know this, but there is a very simple way to make your own candles in any shape, color and size you want. Depending on the size of your homemade candle, you’ll need one to four plain white candle sticks, some food colors, and a container to put the product in. First off, you’ll need to break the candle stick into pieces, careful not to damage the wick. Once you have separated the wick from the wax, you need to melt the wax. If you want to make a single color candle, put the wax in a glass which you will put in a pot of boiling water. If you want to make several colors, divide the amount of wax you have and put it in separate glasses, and again, put the glasses in a pot of boiling water. Once the wax is melted, pour in the color of your choice until you get the wanted shade. Be careful, since some food colors are very strong and you will need to use only a few drops. Stir the mixture to even out the color. Now the mixture is ready to be put in a container. But, before you pour the wax in, make sure that the wick will stay up. A smart trick for that is using chopsticks and putting them horizontally on top of the container, then putting the wick between the chopsticks. Next, get the melted wax and pour it in. If you want, you can decorate it with coffee grains, flower petals or sugar snowflakes. Let it cool off and the homemade candle is done.

5. 52 things I love about you

Oldie, but goodie. This gift is a great idea to give either to your parents, siblings, best friends or your significant other. It represents a clever way to express your love and gratitude towards someone with just a deck of cards. Other than that, you’ll need a hole punch, markers, paper, glue and some ribbon. Start by punching two holes on the left side of each card. Put a piece of paper over the face of the card, making sure it doesn’t cover up the holes and secure it with glue or tape. Proceed to write down your reasons, decorating as you go. When you’re done, take a ribbon and put it through the holes from each side. Tie it, and you’re done.

If you want to give your loved ones a gift with a personal mark, this is the way to go. Show them how much they mean to you by making beautiful and unique presents especially for them.
