There is nothing wrong with being ambitious, setting a goal and doing everything in your power to reach it. Ambitious people usually accomplish a lot in their lives and it seems that they do their tasks more easily. However, there is a fine line between ambition and impatience. People who expect to get a promotion after just a couple of months of working in a company are more impatient than ambitious. Ambitious people usually have patience, and they are moving towards their goal no matter how much time it takes them to reach it. Impatient people want to achieve their goals as quickly as possible and they are often pushy and too eager. Nobody likes working with people who are too pushy and impatient, and they are usually avoiding contact with such colleagues. As we said, there is a fine line between ambition and impatience, and sometimes it is easy to become impatient in our ambitions. If you can’t figure out where you stand regarding these two, these five questions should help you.
1. Are you willing to work for success?
Are you prepared to work for years if it means that you’ll reach your goals that way, or are you the kind of person who ‘wants it all and wants it now’? If you have been working in your company for years and you have been doing your best, developing and bringing profits to the company, you probably deserve a promotion, and wanting it is a matter of ambition. If you’ve waited for so long, waiting for a couple of months won’t change anything, right? If your answer is yes, you’re not impatient – just ambitious.
On the other hand, if you want to achieve a lot in a very short time and you’re hoping to get everything you want with as little effort as possible, you’re not really as ambitious as you are impatient. Lack of patience isn’t something to be proud of. Accept that success takes time to happen and that you need to put in the work in order to get results.
