All girls have probably dreamed about making their hair magically grow faster at some point in their lives. And even though we have to be patient and let our hair grow at its usual pace of about half an inch per month, there are some things we can do to give it a little push. So, here are some things you can do to make your hair grow faster and longer and to make it healthier and stronger altogether.
1. Eat the right food
In order to have healthy hair, you need to begin from the inside and adjust your diet accordingly. First of all, hair is in great deal consisted of proteins, which is why you need to feed it with food that contains plenty of them. Eat meat, eggs, fish, nuts, etc. And try to find the way to compensate for proteins even if you don’t need meat. Furthermore, you should stock up on vitamins and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and cut down on junk food, caffeine and cigarettes. Everything you should do to improve your health in general, basically.
2. Trim regularly
You must have heard by now that you should trim your hair as often as possible to make it grow faster. Well, things don’t really work that way but there is a catch. If you trim your hair regularly, you will prevent split ends and therefore prevent having to chop off even more of your hair because it’s damaged. It’s optimal to go to the hairstylist every 3 months or so and take off just a small bit of your hair or else you could be looking at much worse consequences.
3. Be careful when brushing your hair
How do you expect your hair to grow long an thick if you treat it badly every day? We’re used to brushing our hair from the scalp downwards but this is where we make the mistake. Running the brush from the top down only makes the hair tangle even more and causes you to lose a lot of hair. So make sure to start from the bottom and work your way up, especially when you’re trying to untangle wet hair.
4. Rinse your hair with cold water
At the end of your shower, once you’ve washed your hair, do an extra ste and rinse your hair one more time but with cold water. It will take you just a few seconds more but your hair will thank you. Cold water will make your hair smoother and moisturize it, whereas hot water can further damage your hair and tangle it more.
5. Stop using heat-based tools
Using hair dryers, straighteners or curlers damages our hair immensely. But we can’t seem to help it, because it’s a well known fact that we girls are almost never satisfied with hour our natural hair looks. And while curly-haired girls desperately want straight hair and straight-haired girls want locks, it’s our hair that suffers the most and we are ruining it in the process. If you absolutely need to use heat-based hair-styling tools, try to use them as little as possible and make sure to use heat protectants.
6. Prevent breakage
We tend to damage our hair without even realizing it in a whole array of different ways. But while we are aware brushing our hair violently or using a hair dryer is bad for us, our hair gets damaged even during sleep. Namely, those cotton pillowcases we use most often are causing hair breakage and we would be much better off using a silk, or sateen pillowcases. Moreover, that habit most girls have to wrap our hair into a towel after washing it is something that should be avoided at all costs. It also ruins our hair and damaged hair grows much slower.
7. Use hair masks and oils
Nowadays, you can find a number of hair masks in stores or you can go to your hairstylist and have a (usually expensive) hair treatment. But you don’t have to. Because the best hair masks are actually those you can make at home. They are inexpensive and natural and you will know exactly what you put in them. One of the most commonly used masks is the Egg Mask that is really simple to make and works like a charm. If you have dry hair, mix an egg with some lemon and massage it into your hair. Leave it to sit for 20 minutes and then rinse it with cold or lukewarm water – don’t use hot water! When it comes to the oil, flip your hair upside down and massage it into your scalp down to the tips – it boosts hair growth immensely.
8. Use more conditioner, less shampoo
You should never skip this step when washing your hair. Conditioner saves your hair from breaking, makes it smoother and prevents it from tangling. Conditioner replaces lipids and proteins in the hair, therefore making it stronger and healthier. What you should skip every now and then is shampoo. While shampoo helps clean the hair from dirt and other products, it also removes the natural oils that are so essential for your hair’s health and growth. That’s why you should use as little shampoo as possible and apply it at the scalp only, letting it slide down while you rinse.
9. Learn the right hair-washing routine
You should never wash your hair more than twice a week. Washing it every 3 days is quite enough since water, shampoo and drying all remove natural oils from the hair and cause breakage. Moreover, you should never use hot water to wash your hair. Use lukewarm water before applying the shampoo and after you’ve applied conditioner, rinse with cold water to close up pores. You have also probably applied conditioner wrong your whole life – the correct way of applying it isn’t from the roots, it’s from mid-length to the tips.
