What to Do Next if You’ve Lost Your Job

Losing one’s job can certainly feel like the world’s ending, but it’s not. You may feel angry, depressed, unwanted and a million other things but the first and most important thing to do is to take a step back, accept the situation and be optimistic. You can’t change what’s happened but you can definitely choose to make the most of it.

1. Take time to accept it

Don’t expect to know exactly what to do next a few hours after you’ve lost your job. It something unexpected and it will be a shock for you, so treat it as such. Take some time to make your peace with the new situation and to realize there will be some changes. This may take several weeks and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it or pressure you into jumping into something you don’t want.

This is your unique opportunity to take some time to relax as well, and maybe dedicate yourself to something you like doing. Surround yourself with friends and family, and positive atmosphere. Once you’ve accepted the situation, it’s your chance to think about what you want to do next. Maybe you want to do something completely different, or maybe you want to go back to college. The beauty of it is that you have all the options open once again.
